G'afternoon all!
The ubiquitous but obligatory introduction post is here. A bit about me: 28, enrolled and proud Eastern Band of Cherokee woman, married, no children, 2 cats, medical social worker with an MSW and working on my LCSW credentials. My husband and I were high school sweethearts who dated 5 years (or engaged) and married 5 years. He is the back-end support and code-producer and editor for a small design firm located in town; he has several years of undergraduate university but did not graduate due to this job opportunity and our move.
Speaking of our move: we moved to Western North Carolina in March. My great-aunt was ill and we moved so I could care for her AND my husband found work. I ended up getting a medical social work position at the local hospital and my aunt got well and went back to work (at 71!). We had saved quite a bit for the move but neither of us had ever moved out of state before and found that the nest egg went quickly and we ran up our credit cards to the tune of $4k.
The credit card is not too bad but where we are really in debt is student loans. I have 7 years of school paid for with loans to the tune of $77k and the husband has about $47k - $14k in Sallie Mae private loans. We have no car or house debt.
We live in a cute but small apartment in the central area of the city - I walk to and from work and husband works from home most of the week. We're not into gourmet dining or a lot of entertainment but books and eating out our are biggest issues, which we are working on. Financially, we are brining in about $3700 a month gross with fixed expenses at $950 a month.
I am very excited to be here and any feed back on paying down student loans is appreciated.
