Last year I took advantage of the opportunity to open a free chequing account and close my old one that was costing me money regardless of how much I used it.
I now get free checks and I can use the same ATM I would normally use for the old bank account.
Are free chequing accounts an option in your area?
What do you consider free? I mean what do you mean by free exactly?
Every bank account is free if you don't count having to have a small depost put into your new account. If you open an account most of the time you have to put money into it. I don't consider that to be free but at the same time I do because you aren't exactly spending your money, you are putting it into your account, so you still possess it.

I mean free as in no service fees and you don't pay for cheques.

The bank account I closed a few months ago was not free. I had a balance in it for several months without writing cheques on it, and each month a service charge was charged for absolutely no activity on the account.
What bank is free with no service fees? I joined a bank once and it had free checking. However, I learned that it really wasn't free due to certain fees, such as bouncing a check cause you were $.50 short. Other fees, like to transfer from savings to checking to cover a check. The list went on.
