Let's discuss info/ideas/suggestions/experiences with part-time jobs? What are good companies to work for? What companies offer very flexible hours? Pay the most? Have unusual benefits?

Here is a thread at fatwallet discussing companies that offer tuition reimbursement.

I've also been looking at phone rep jobs from home mainly because the hours are very flexible, but I think I would hate the work. Here are some companies that I found from an MSN article that seem legitimate.

One thing I've discovered is that part-time jobs will usually meet only one to two of the three requirements we'd like:

Many will have flexibility

Some will have good pay

and few will have benefits.

Usually, I just go for the flexibility.  I have a day job, so just having something where I can show up on the evenings or weekends and not wear myself out is enough for me.  I have LOADS of experience at Movie Theaters (which take 0 experience to get a job at) and you are almost guaranteed flexibility.  Most of the time you will be asked to work weekends and Holidays, so choose your location wisely (the smaller/slower/ more 'ghetto" the theater, the more likely they are to be forgiving with your schedule).  They almost always pay minimum wage, BUT you get free movies, soda and popcorn.  To me, those things are what keep me sane.  They aren't anything like Dental coverage, but benefits enough to keep my head screwed on tight while I'm working more than full time.

Other good part-time work (not from home) would be book stores and coffee shops.  Again with minimum wage, but you can still keep from going crazy at those places.  Check craigslist in the "part time," or "etc" section.

Good luck!

Soul2quz,

I was just reading that you are doing a blogging job for this site. So, you are getting paid to post here? I'm just wondering. I'm starting to feel a little funny here as I have also seen several people from here with guest articles on personal finance blogs. How many people are here for real? and how many are being paid?

Otherwise, I have an interview next week to do telephone answering after hours for an answering service for drs and lawyers. Hoping to get that job.

Hey Christine,
Not for this site, i'm just saying this other site offers blogging jobs. But you do get revenue share for posting here, everyone on this site does! But trust me im in debt, im a college student and there is no way i could not be in debt. I ran across this site and joined and then later learned it gave revenue for posting. which was a great plus.

Good luck on your interview!!

I have found that working part time in the restaurant industry can be quite helpful. Personally, I work at a truck stop, which lends itself to poor tips, but when you're in debt, cash is cash, so it doesn't much matter. However, in the next couple weeks I will be transferring to a different restaurant, which deals with the larger portion of the public, and they do tip much better than truck drivers. I only work about 25 hours a week, but I can still make $30-50 a night in tips! It isn't exactly a fun job, but it works, and it gets me by.

I work about 60-70 hours a week in the restaurant industry. I'm hoping to find a job that is not in a restaurant. I could easily find a job cooking 1 day a week if I lowered my standards a little and I could easily make $125 plus for a days work. But I value my sanity a little more.

That's true. Sanity is in very short supply in the restaurant industry. On the other hand, I hear that driving deliveries for pizza places and catering places makes some good extra cash as well!

Have you ever given a thought to home catering services? My friend through high school did a catering service for parties, occasions, and dinner parties and such. She passed out flyer's in high schools, offices (where she sometimes got contracts for once a month food delivery) and stuff. She made pretty good money, plus she liked it better.  She hated working in restaurants and bakery's. This way its in your own time, sanitary, and pretty good money. You guys should look into it. Good luck with the jobs!

I had an interview today for a 2 night a week night auditor job for a hotel. I'll basically be doing the front desk and running end of day reports. It's 11-7 and that works for me so I don't have to pay for daycare for my children. I should be able to bring home about 140 a week after taxes. Plus, there is a possibility for extra shifts. I'm hoping to do a double tackle, and do half to emergency fund, half to debt.
