Last year I replaced my old bank chequing account with service fees for a "President's Choice" one with no service fees.
This saves me a few dollars every month. Has anybody else here looked into these?
I haven't heard of it but I would like to change over from Bank of America because they also charge certain maintaince fees for my savings account. I don't know if President bank serves in my area though.
In Ontario, the President's Choice bank accounts are available to open through some kiosks in their grocery stores.
After that, you use ATMs at CIBC locations. I guess you could probably use any ATM, but I'm not sure if there would be a charge for using ATMs other than CIBC's.
There are a lot of banks in this area that advertise free checking. But it's for a very basic account. If you want on-line service, bill pay, or other such things, there is a monthly few. Make sure you read the small print.
In my experience these free checking accounts are not really free. I was with Washington Mutual and wrote a check for $88.00, and overlooked the fact that I only had $76 in my checking account. I had a savings account associated with this same checking account and it had over $33 in it. Plus, I had overdraft protection, since I had been a customer for 2 years and never bounced a check. They bounced my $88. check and charged me $22 for it. By the time I learned of this, the check went through two more times at $22 each. $66 it cost me to bounce and original $88 and they wouldn't transfer money from savings to checking. I closed my account their. Be careful of unexpected fees on free checking accounts.
