A little thing I started when I approached my debt was a coin jar, I know it sounds a silly idea but I simply threw a few coppers that I had in my change into it everyday (including those I found on the street). The purpose? Well as I was directing all my effort into paying off my debts it was all outgoing with very little for treats so at the end of the month the few pounds in the jar could be used as a gift to myself for all the hard work...
I do something similar - I have a teramundi pot that I fill up and use all the money once it's full to buy something nice. I don't build up enough change over a month to raid it that often, unfortunately.
Its very satisfying to see the pot fill up over time ![]()
And I thought you were going to say to save your change as extra to pay off debt. I like your idea much better. Use it to reward yourself for working so hard in other areas.
Without the rewards, paying off debt will make you miserable and apt to splurge. (I speak from too much experience here.)
I have a one gallon pickle jar I am trying to fill, No luck yet.
Cool idea. I should get one.
Whatever you keep them in, a coin jar is a good idea.
I have two coin jars, one for the extra change we have and then one for curse words. I have actually saved up 300 bucks just from my change.
I saw a movie where they had a swear jar. I wonder if I should try using one of those. The problem is I don't always have change on me, so what would I do, put in an IOU?
I saw that movie. It was Moving with Richard Pryor. When he told his wife and family about the move, his daughter said a swear word, and he told her to put a quarter in the jar. Then his wife takes her purse and starts counting out dollar bills. I guess she had a few words for the jar. I think that's where I got the idea.

We have a coin jar for spare change. I tend to use it if I want to go out for ice cream or something, but sometimes I just use it for extra grocery money.
