How do people invest with their 0% cash advances? I've heard a lot of people do this BUT what do you invest ing? CD's, the stock market? Do you pay the card off at the end of the offer or as you go?
Is it worth it?
The idea totally scares me, because I would have a hard time not using the card!
I guess it is similar to having an investor?
The down side is many 0 balance transfers have a transfer fee of 3% . Plus they have so many loopholes, such as late pays, not just the zero transfer card but any credit card on your credit file.
Once a acount review is done on ones credit file usually once to twice a year. Any problems mentioned above and the default rate goes into effect.
On my CDs I make about 5% not much of a return on my money.
If you would be tempted to use the card my advice is stay away from the offer.
For some reason the idea of using borrowed money to invest gives me a weird and uncomfortable feeling. I think it's because I've learned to assume that any time I see 0%, I need to look harder at the fine print and see what kind of rate they really plan on charging me down the line.
I am trying this out with a new card from Citibank. It is 0% balance transfer, 12 months, no transfer fees. I think if you are comfortable with managing bills and do it automatically, it's very feasible. The return obviously depends on the amount borrowed. But since you pay the minimum amount each month, you can still maintain a large sum in an online savings account throughout the 12 months. I would draw the line at online savings and CD's though. Using borrowed money to invest in stocks is too risky in my opinion.
Here is a good overview:
