I believe there are two major types of Bankruptcy, Chapter 7 and Chapter 11. I am not sure of the particulars of them though.
There are actually four types of bankruptcy: Chapters 7, 11, 12 and 13.
I think chapters 7 and 13 are the most common types of personal bankrupcy, where 7 is total debt elimination and 13 allows for some exemptions.
Chapter 11 is for mostly for businesses that wish to reorganize but can also be available to individuals.
Chapter 12 bankruptcy is for family farmers only.
Never realized there was that many types.
I agree with you Wanna be debt. Didn't some of the new laws for chapter 7 do something to change the total debt elimination part. Are you still able to claim total debt elimination in chapter 7??
It's good to know the different options people have. Do you need a lawyer to file or can you do it by yourself? Does it cost much to file?
